One reason I enjoy urology is that, when we do surgery on people, it usually results in a lot of relief. A good example is kidney stones.
I’ve seen a lot of people in terrific pain from a kidney stone,
and when their discomfort is relieved, they are some of the happiest people that you will ever meet. It gives me a great deal of satisfaction to be able to help them.
As a urologist, one of my specialties is treatment of women's urinary incontinence, both surgically and medically.
One appealing thing is that the vast majority of women's incontinence problems are not treated with surgery, but with medications, behavior modifications and changes in diet. It's the vast minority of patients who have surgery recommended for that, and usually the few who do need surgery for their leakage are begging for it and are ready to have it, and it has a very high success rate.
A 30-minute operation as an outpatient with a high success rate has replaced a two-hour operation as an inpatient with a three-day stay and poor success rate.
The 30-minute outpatient surgery involves placement of a mesh sling through small openings resulting in little post-operative pain and a quick return to normal activity.
