Things have really improved in the last 30 years, and we offer state-of-the-art treatments.
I'm a certified instructor in GreenLight™ laser vaporization, a new outpatient technique that remedies an enlarged prostate. We've been offering GreenLight™ here for the last three or four years, and AMS, the company that manufactures the laser, tells me that I've done more laser vaporization for prostate enlargement than any other physician in Tennessee or Kentucky.
Visualize the prostate as a donut with a little bitty hole.
A lot of older men can't empty their bladders because their prostate gets bigger and makes the hole smaller, so I enlarge the hole so the urine can go out easily. We start off with a conservative approach, but if medicine doesn't work, we can take care of their problem with laser vaporization.
After the procedure, patients can go home without a catheter, which they love.
When we did it the old way, using transurethral resection (TUR), the patient was in the hospital for about three days and had a lot of bleeding and had to have a catheter. With the laser, there's very little bleeding. I also treat kidney stones, and I have a piece of advice for people who form stones easily: The way to avoid kidney stones is to restrict your meat intake. That also helps prevent enlargement of the prostate.
